The need for energy storage systems has arisen with the rapid deployment of large scale solar and wind projects. Wind and solar facilities are intermittent power producers, with relatively low “capacity factors”. Because the power produced is frequently out of phase with demand, energy storage is used to balance generation with demand. Energy storage also dampens the sudden drops or increases in power that are associated with large scale wind and solar projects.
The following energy storage systems are proposed at the Star Peak site
- Compressed Air and/or Pumped Hydro
- Thermal Storage
- Flow Batteries
